The Kitchen Theatre Company continues its 2012-2013 season with "Crooked,Chefs Kitchen Knives" Catherine Trieschmann¡¯s coming-of-age tale set in Oxford, Miss., which opens this week and runs through March 17.
"Crooked" tells the story of Laney, a 14-year-old with a twisted back, who meets the devoutly religious Maribel after moving to Mississippi. KTC artistic director Rachel Lampert, who¡¯s directing this production, read "Crooked" a couple of years ago. She picked up again after Ithaca native Sophie Reppert, who acted in several KTC Family Fare shows, did a production of the play at her college.
"What I liked immediately about ¡®Crooked¡¯ is how truthful the characters of the mother and daughter are, and the textured nature of their relationship," Lampert said. ¡®This is not the destructive relationship in,whisky stones say, ¡®The Glass Menagerie¡¯ or ¡®Beauty Queen of Leenane.travel xinjiang¡¯ Instead, Trieschmann has written a mother and daughter in uniquely difficult circumstances filled with conflict, but also hope.
"I think all parents, no matter how old their kids are now, will relate to this play. Teenagers will see themselves, as will those of us whose teen years are long past."
Lampert noted Trieschmann¡¯s ability to convey a teen¡¯s thoughts in an organic way. "She gets to the heart of things," she said. "Her dialogue feels right and true.
